9:39 pm - Arty Farty

The mummies got together for 2 arty farty events these last months. Actually, we didn't mean it to be arty farty, it was a nice excuse for all of us to get together.

1. Singapore National Museum
A pair of guys set up a children's workshop kind of thing. I can't remember the company name now, but they were quite good. Basically, it was an hour of puppetry, songs, imaginative play as well as free play. The morning started out quite badly with Ignatius wanting to be carried while the other toddlers roamed the grounds.
Here he is looking distinctly grouchy when I put him down momentarily. However, once inside, he saw the stairway, and literally climbed all the way to the third floor, where the workshop was to be held. He didn't do too badly inside, which I thank the childcare environment for. He followed instructions to sit, walk, etc quite well, and didn't need me by his side while the song and action segment went on. Neither did he need me during the puppet show. Nor did he need me during the imaginary enactment of preparing and going for a picnic.
Here he is trying to play with nuts and bolts, which were still beyond his fine motor skills.

This was during the puppetry i think. Ignatius wanted to run up like the Ong sisters to touch the puppets, but didn't make it all the way.

This is basically how he spent the whole sing-a-long session. Squatting. And not joining in any of the actions while the rest of the kids copied the lead singer with gusto.

And for some reason, he lifted up his shirt during the session!

2. The Little Red Hen
The posters and art work for this musical looked very promising. The language used to promote the contents of the play looked simple enough. But alas, the actual language used in the play were pretty difficult for 2 year olds to grasp. And they didn't look quite like the hen, mouse, cat and goose I imagined that would appeal to young toddlers. Ignatius did quite well before the show started, sitting obediently on his seat. However, once play started that the mouse was yelling at the top of her voice, he got scared and wanted to go out. He started crying and I brought him out for a while to calm him down. I manage to persuade him to go back in again but we had to stand at the back and I had to carry him for the remainder of the 40 minutes, dancing at times. He didn't quite like the characters, but was quite enthusiastic during certain interactive parts of the show. We didn't think it left any impression on him. But 5 days later, he started singing "little red hen little red hen" and doing the chicken wing flapping motions. Wow, they do absorb more than you think!
