Just found this Canadian website. Not too bad!
In it are a list of things a 13-14mth old is in the midst of learning/can do. Let's go through it together!
What's it like to be 13 and 14 months old?
How I grow
- I poke, bang, turn and twist everything I can reach. Yes
- I can probably stand alone and walk pretty well. Yes
- I can probably stoop and stand up again. Not Yet
- I'm very interested in small things like crumbs, bugs and pebbles. Most Definitely
- I spend a lot of time just staring at things. This is one way I learn. I thought he's tired when he does this!
- I don't like any kind of restraint. Bingo
- I want to explore everything. Most Definitely
- I may be afraid of the dark. Don't think so. *cross fingers*
How I talk
- I am learning simple words. Yes
- I can look in the right direction when you ask: "Where's Daddy?" "Where's the ball?" "Where's the kitty?" Yes
- I wave bye-bye if you ask. Yes unless he's being stubborn.
- I can let you know when I want something like a glass of milk. I think so. Still learning how to understand his communication.
- I really try hard to make you understand me. Yes if that means throwing tantrums.
- I like to repeat words you say. Yes
- I have begun to understand the names of some people, animals, and things that are important to me. Yes
- Sometimes I like you to tell me the names of things pictured in a book. But I don't like stories very much yet. Ignatius likes stories. With big pictures. We started him young.
What I am learning
- I am learning what you will let me do and what you won't. Yes. Sometimes, he will say No-No on our behalf, and avoid doing the forbidden. Good Boy.
- I will empty anything I can get to -- dresser drawers, kitchen cabinets, trash cans. Not sure. We usually steer him clear before he gets the notion to.
- I like to put things back in containers -- sometimes. Now he does!
- I like to imitate your actions. Yes
- I have learned how to get you and other adults to help me do things. Most Definitely!
- I may scream just to show you how powerful I am. Bingo
- Sometimes -- not often -- I will respond to a firm "no-no." Yes
- I have not yet learned what is dangerous for me to do. Unfortunately Yes
How I get along with others
- I love to have people watch me and clap for me. Most Definitely
- I'm starting to do cute things just to get your attention. YES
- I show I love you with hugs and kisses -- sometimes. No lah! Only head bangs us. His idea of KISS.
- I still like to keep my mother and father in sight when I'm exploring. YES
- Sometimes, I drop things just to get you to pick them up for me. Yes
- I'm beginning to adjust to baby-sitters, but I'm still shy with strangers. No. He's over that. Just trick him by telling him you'll bring him to see bus/bird.
- I don't like playing in a room by myself very much. Yes
- I may have tantrums and throw things when I'm angry. Very much Yes
What I can do for myself
- If you help me, I can hold a cup and drink from it. Yes. But a lot dribbles out.
- I like to take off my hat, shoes, socks and pants, but I can't put them back on. In a way! He's been lifting his shirt/pant legs (like in a curtsy) recently!
- I can hold a spoon, but I probably can't eat very well with it. Yes. Not well at all.
- I like to feed myself with my hands, and smear food on my face. Yes
- I can open and close doors. Yes. And he's learnt to watch out for his toes as well...painful lesson there.
Play I enjoy
- I like to put little things in big things. Nope
- I can play alone. But mostly, I like to play with you -- especially chase-me, find-me games and gentle rough-housing. Yes. Especially with Daddy.
- I like to listen to music and dance to it. Most Definitely.
- I'm beginning to like pretend play, like driving a pretend car. Yes. He likes to pretend to feed us as well. He'd offer his food/water bottle, and take away when we're almost at it. Now, who taught him that??
