11:55 am - Stages of walking

Did you know there are many stages to learning to walk?

This is what i've observed from Ignatius, from a few months old, till now. I think the sequence is about right. I guess it varies from toddler to toddler.

1. Place their feet flat on a surface when you carry them upright.
2. Push/kick at the surface.
3. Sit upright without support.
4. Do a "Running Man" motion, on the spot, when you hold them at the armpits.
5. Pull themselves to sitting position from lying down position.
6. Crawl.
7. Stand upright while holding onto support.
8. Pull themselves to standing position from sitting position.
9. Walk with support, eg. holding armpits.
10. Learn to "cruise", that is, walk a short distance while holding onto support, eg. table.
11. Stand without support.
12. Walk with less support, eg. holding wrists/holding walker.
13. Sit, from a standing position, without support.
14. First few steps taken.
15. Walk with destination in mind, eg. walk into Daddy/Mommy's arms.
16. Able to stoop and stand to pick things up, while holding onto support.
17. Walk into open space.
18. Able to stoop and stand without support.
19. Walk while holding onto something, eg. toy.
20. Walk while manipulating something.
21. Running!
22. Jumping!

Ignatius has finally reached number 17, and demonstrated number 18 once or twice. We were so amazed on Sunday when instead of crashing into our arms, he continued past us towards the big unknown behind us! And instead of plonking down on his butt after, he turned around and continued ambling along to different parts of our bedroom. Well done Ignatius darling!

Well, as we have no experience past number 17, here's an article from Babycentre for more documented information.
