1:01 pm - Leftie

Recently, we bought a pair of training chopsticks for Ignatius.

They come in right and left handed versions, and i bought 4 pairs of right handed ones. Aunty Jamie bought 2 pairs of left handed ones. It seems that Aunty Jamie was more in tune with reality, and she kindly swopped a pair with me.

Thus, armed with both a rightie and a leftie, i proceeded to "test" Ignatius. First, i gave him the rightie. We soon got the fingers figured out, but his execution of the opening and closing of the sticks were clunky, for want of a better word. We weren't very successful at picking up anything. Resigned, i handed over the leftie. And viola, within the next 2 minutes, Ignatius got the hang of it, and was going round picking up socks!

I found out from Emma's mom that her school reports on their observations on whether the children favoured left or right. So i thought i'd ask his teacher as well. I forgot to write it in the communication book till this morning. I thought i'd receive a reply after maybe 2 days or so, as the teacher had to observe first right?... I was so wrong. On that day itself, the reply came. "Ignatius uses his left hand when painting or drawing. He is left handed for now." That got me thinking... "for now"? Does that mean that this is merely a phase, and is she hinting that it can still be changed? Hmmm...

Anyway, i think we will proceed assuming that he is left handed. Neither Mommy nor Daddy are left handers, and there are no family members that are either. I hope there are no surprises along the way as to teaching him how to write!

In the mean time, here's him using those lefties!
