11:09 pm - First revelations

In our lives, there are many "firsts". Some more obvious, some more subtle. As our babies grow up, the obvious ones are causes for celebration.
The first tooth
The first word
The first stand
The first step

The subtle ones, are causes for amazement and wonderment.

Let me explain.

The NutCracker
Ignatius recently found out that he can use his upper and lower teeth together to chomp down on food, and that some foods produce a cracking sound. He broke into a mischievous grin, obviously delighted with his new discovery. Watch the video to share his delight at his discovery. Listen very hard for the "Crack" sound! Such little things delight them!

Picasso

Mommy has been thinking of buying crayons, drawing paper and colour pencils for a while now. Ignatius looks adept enough at his hand-eye coordination to do some drawing. However, I've been procrastinating as I anticipate push back from various parties coz it's gonna get MESSY!

As usual, this Mommy missed the OBVIOUS choice of our childhood toy...the MAGNA DOODLE! Of course...now they no longer call it the Magna Doodle...but Doodle Pro.

Well, Ignatius took to it like a fish to water. I was amazed actually that he comprehended that the swirly black lines on the screen were the effect of him dragging the pen on the screen! He was beginning to grasp cause and effect! Heck, the little rascal even knew when he was writing with the wrong end of the pen, coz no black swirly lines came out, and would immediately turn the pen around. This is definitely a far cry from the days when he didn't even know his leg/arm belonged to him.

He also soon figured out that the screen can be cleaned. He's a neat freak like his Dad. AND he'd rather be waited upon too...rather than action a little himself. He'd scribble 1 or 2 lines on the screen, and "Eh Eh EH" for it to be cleaned before he would scribble some more. The little twit.

Moon
Ignatius looked up one day last weekend, outside MacDonald's at Ridout, and noticed the moon. He didn't say anything, but stared at it in silence, quite mesmerized. Yes, we've pointed to him pictures of the sun, and the moon, and the stars...but that day, he noticed for himself, the glowing quarter moon up in the darkened sky.

One can gather information from various literature, but nothing beats encountering that info yourself, and watching it come alive right before your very eyes. I guess it's kind of like how we can read up on how Ignatius will grow and develop in books, but to actually grow up with him, to experience him as he develops both physically, mentally and emotionally, is a miracle that is beyond compare.

That night, I actually looked up at the moon with him, and somehow, the moon looked a little different. It looked a little more mystical, a little more fairytale, a little more magical, it glowed a little more, and seemed a little more other-worldly.

Call it hogwash, or sentimentalism, or whatever, but that was the power of feeling the wonderment of a little boy, noticing the moon for the first time, communicating itself to me as I carried him, standing in the middle of a dimly lit carpark in the middle of busy Singapore.

Alright, it's either time to hand you those tissues, or the barf bucket. *grin* But seriously, I'm beginning to learn to see things the way Ignatius sees things. Where everything is fresh and new, and marvel at everything again. It's a magical feeling.

YX looks into the sky and says moong moong and would turn her head all round to find it if it's hiding behind the thick clouds :)

It is so sweet to see our little darlings grow up!
